The Temple of Garni is located in the village of Garni in Kotayk Province, is the only standing pagan temple in Armenia and the former Soviet Union. it is the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia and seen by many as a potent icon of Armenia’s classical past as well as its deep historical ties to the civilizations of Greece and Rome.
The structure was built by king Tiridates the first in the first century AD as a temple to the Sun God Mihr. After Armenia’s conversion to Christianity in the early fourth century, it was converted into a royal summer house of Khosrovidukht, the sister of the Armenian king Tiridates the third.
